Spacehold Massage Therapy
FAQ
What does a typical session look like?
First we will start with a brief intake and, if applicable, assessment. This is to determine the best course of treatment for the session, to understand more about your health story, and focus the work to achieve the most effective and efficient outcomes.
Then, I will step out of the room while you undress to your comfort level and lay on the massage table underneath the sheets and blanket.
With a knock, I will ask if it is ok to come in, and we will begin the session. Remember, you are in the driver's seat. There is no right or normal way to receive massage therapy. You are encouraged to vocalize any requests, questions, etc. Your treatment is completely tailored towards your needs, goals, preferences, and considerations.
What should I wear?
You may wear any amount of clothing and gender affirming garments/products during your treatment. Massage therapy remains effective even while fully clothed! You may also get fully undressed. It is entirely up to you. We will discuss what is most comfortable for you during our intake before the session begins. You will always be comfortably and safely draped for privacy, security, and warmth.
How should I prepare for my session?
Ideally, your session is booked at a time where you can arrive without rushing to get there and leave without rushing to your next event. It is also a great idea not to be too full or too hungry, as either can make you a little uncomfortable during the massage. Goldilocks was onto something.
You will be sent confidential intake/consent and health history forms prior to your first appointment. Please fill these out no later than 12 hours prior to your appointment. These forms are legally required and ensure the highest degree of preparation for your session.
How early should I arrive?
Please arrive 5-10 minutes early for your session unless otherwise stated. This gives us enough time to discuss your session, use the restroom, and arrive on the table unhurried.
When should one *not* get a massage?
Massage is contraindicated or not advised if you are experiencing contagious illness, fever, unexplained rashes, infection, or nausea/vomiting/diarrhea. If you are too sick to go to work, you are too sick to receive massage. If you have recently suffered an acute injury (3 days or less before your appointment) we may need to adapt your treatment or postpone it.
What are common responses to massage?
The nervous system responds in a variety of physiological and energetic ways to the instigation of the parasympathetic nervous (your rest and digest state) system that massage elicits. These include but are not limited to: yawning, sighing, moving or changing position, change in breathing rhythm, stomach gurgling, emotional feelings, memory recall, falling asleep, energy shifts. There is no "normal" way to experience massage, you are encouraged to allow your body to express itself. There is always room during your treatment to communicate, ask questions, and make adjustments. Taking good care of you is my top priority.
How should I expect to feel after the session?
My goal is for you to leave feeling better than when you arrived and to feel a total mind and body relaxation. Some people will quickly notice a difference in their movement, posture, and body awareness. Some people feel a little sleepy or tucked away. Others, talkative and energized. Again, everyone is unique and there is no "normal", therefore there is nothing that falls outside of that.
Does massage need to be deep pressure?
The goal of my massage therapy is to create safety in your body which allows your nervous system to relax your muscles and your mind. Lots of people enjoy the intense sensations that can sometimes arise when working in a specifically tight muscle or area. Some people may find these sensations uncomfortable. Ultimately, your goals, preferences, and considerations are the foundation of your treatment. If deep work feels great and is productive, that's great! If lighter work is better for you, that is also great! We will communicate before, during, and after your session to ensure the work remains comfortable, productive, and therapeutic.
How do I book an appointment?
You can book an appointment directly from this calendar!
Or, feel free to send me an email to set up an appointment, either in studio or at your home.
I am looking forward to our session.
What is the deal with no-tip, flat rates?
I believe in moving away from tipping as an obligatory cultural practice. I personally prefer transparent, all inclusive pricing that covers my expenses and that doesn't rely an additional tip. "But I really want to leave a tip!" OK! I am certainly not going to stop you, however, as stated, it is not expected or required. Also, consider non-monetary tips! An old band tee, a trinket, a cool guitar pick. I would love to fill my future full-time studio with gifts from my clients and friends.
If you work with another massage therapist, tipping is customary and is expected unless otherwise stated.
